Bachelor of Design in Product Design

The Product Design Programme focuses on developing skills, knowledge and attitude among students. Students learn to correlate technical knowledge, manufacturing processes, ergonomics and other related topics to design products with real time needs. Soft skills required for the profession are also taught and they are made sensitive to social, ecological and environmental issues. Students are encouraged to go beyond designing individual products to designing holistic systems that work together to meet user needs.

First Year

First year is common foundation for all students. The focus is on exploration and getting a designer mindset. Students will also learn about the process of design and how to apply human centered approach to problem solving. An introduction is given to all the subjects that they will explore further in the later years. An optimum mix of traditional and new design skills is offered along with the subject like history of design and creative process.

Second Year

Students who join Product design disciplines have to be given technical knowledge and have to also acquire soft skills require for the profession. Courses like Materials and processes, rendering techniques upgrade them in these aspects. The first product design assignment the students do is simple product design. This also supplemented by course inputs like ergonomics, CAID and manufacturing processes.

Third Year

After acquiring some basic skills of Product design, the students are now capable to handle complex products and systems. The students interact with industry, institutes as well as social organizations during their projects. They take projects to understand , study, analyze and solve various existing problems. Technically complex products and systems are handled during this year. Students work as individuals as well as a team during this year. The students are expected to achieve a certain level of quality of prototypes in this year.

During these assignments, continuous inputs in materials and process, consumer studies and design, value engineering, history of design enrich them in various other aspects related to the profession.

Fourth Year

Various projects related to environmental issues are handled in this year. Students choose their areas of specialization. Currently the institute offers specialization in user experience design and has plans to include areas such as transportation design and furniture design. The final semester students have to work on a real time project with the industry as a part of their course requirement.

An important component that the institute looks at is exposure to various practicing designers, industrial visits, trade fares, exhibitions as well as design competitions. The institute takes special efforts to see to it that the students are made visible through these interactions with the industry as well as practicing professionals.
